About this place
Beginning the day with the aroma of freshly grilled fish and hot miso soup provides a comforting start to any morning. Located in Hikawacho, Itabashi Ward, Ichiryu Syokudo is an old-fashioned neighbourhood eatery that opens at 7:00, serving unpretentious Japanese set meals. During early hours, a streamlined morning teishoku brings together a small bowl of rice, miso soup, natto, and broccoli, offering a handy option for workers on their commute or anyone seeking a quiet breakfast.
Daily Lunches Centred on Grilled Fish and Side Dishes
At lunchtime, the daily set meals often spotlight classic fish dishes such as salted mackerel, grilled salmon, or butterflied horse mackerel. Alongside the crisp, grilled fish, trays feature homestyle sides like simmered hijiki seaweed or potato salad, accompanied by warm miso soup to make a satisfying, grounded midday meal. On other days, a stir-fried vegetable dish, fried egg, or simmered deep-fried tofu takes centre stage, ensuring a reliable rotation of comforting flavours.
Customising the Tray with Small Plates
One of the great pleasures of a traditional shokudo is building out a personal meal with extra small plates. Crispy-edged ham and eggs, slowly simmered nikudofu beef and tofu, braised pumpkin, and tender stewed beef tendon are among the array of side dishes displayed on small paper strips across the walls. For heartier cravings, the kitchen's thick, old-style Japanese curry rice remains another dependable staple.
An Easygoing Everyday Stop
Arranged primarily with table seating, the modest dining room welcomes solo eaters without any fuss. The day runs on a split schedule, closing between the morning shift at 9:30 and reopening for lunch at 10:30, so checking the hours before dropping by is essential. Payment is cash only, so have notes or coins ready before heading in to enjoy an unhurried, everyday Japanese meal.
